Shadow of the Colossus is a game you have to experience, no matter what kind of a gamer you are. Similarly, all the other Colossi have dramatic entrances that will actually leave you with goosebumps. The sight of the first colossus will actually send shivers down your spine, as he emerges from a wave in the mist to a full-formed giant, with birds flying around his ramparts and pieces of rubble falling off him as he walks. The atmosphere the new graphics lend to the game is cinematic. Their stone sections have detailed texture maps and they look incredible with their segmentation. The Colossi, though, get the best part of the overhaul - as the fur on their bodies moves realistically to their motion. The game looks gorgeous as the cursed land is lush, forests are dense with foliage, and deserts are chaotic with sand. The original game was beautiful for its time, but the new 2018 edition brings all-new graphics, better animation and so much more to the fold. Once you reach the top, delivering the killer blow, which corrupts Wander in turn, with every colossi killed.Įverything about Shadow of the Colossus has been redone from the ground up. Sometimes, while you’re climbing up their legs, you need to figure out ways to make them position their bodies in such a way, you get access to the upper parts. Think of the colossi as sixteen different puzzles, letting you plan and find the trick of how to mount them. Once you reach the glowing weak spots, you need to punch your sword in to deplete its health. You will need to grab onto fur, leverage yourself onto platforms and jump between large chasms - all the while the giant is thrashing about to get you off its back. A crucial mechanic to follow, because the towering colossus are large, moving platforming levels. To grab onto objects, you need to hold down the trigger button and watch your grip gauge for stamina. The other half of Shadow of the Colossus are the platforming elements that use a unique control scheme and approach towards the tried-and-tested platform formula. Most of the time, just roaming around the beautiful redone landscape in 4K and HDR on Agro’s back is one of the most satisfying and relaxing things. The other part of exploration is following a beam of light from your sword, as you make your way to the next colossus. With the new Colossus 2018, there is also an addition of collectible coins, that point to some sort of secret. One part is exploring the world and finding lizards and fruit that increase your health and stamina. In terms of presentation, Shadow of the Colossus is unparalleled.Īt its heart, Shadow of the Colossus is an open-world, puzzle, platforming action game. The colossi themselves are beautifully designed, and despite their size, they are essentially harmless unless attacked - making you feel bad for killing them, but hey, you got to save the girl, and yes, there is a twist in the tale. A world ripe for you to explore, as it cascades from deserts to rocky mountains to forests to grasslands littered with mysterious ruins - as you try hard to piece together what happened to this land for it to be cursed. From the simple yet lush landscapes to the simplicity of the gameplay to the storyline that lets you fill in the blanks. The beauty of this story and the game is how minimalist it is. A unique game in a unique world, with a beautiful story which centres around a young man named Wander, who travels through perilous terrain on a horse named Agro, with the dead body of a maiden named Mono, to a temple in a cursed land, where he appeals to the powers that be to give life back to the girl - at a terrible price, which is to hunt down sixteen colossi that wander this desolate land. You can see some screenshots of the map, and grab the BSP for yourself, over here. The HDR lighting and the scenery is just mind-blowing. It's a Colossus fighting with a Combine walker, statuesque. The BSP is 160MB, pretty much guaranteeing that no internet servers are going to run it, but the centrepiece of the map makes it worth downloading. 'Warby' Seidel, has put together a stunning array of super-high-res textures which make the map look incredible. The map, DE_Wanda, looks absolutely stunning. Well, someone made a Counter-Strike map based on it. It had rave reviews when it was released last year, and is the kind of game that's worth picking up the console just to play. Many of you, we are sure, will be familiar with Shadow of the Colossus, the PS2 game that is the follow-up to ICO. Mark this down as one of the slickest game mods that we've seen for quite a while.
